Um, .45 ACP ammo? JK. .45 ACP is a very forgiving caliber. John Browning's masterpiece. Hard to find a load that does not shoot reliably with good accuracy. Cost and cleanliness might be the deciding factors for range ammo. Most of the major makers produce reasonable ammo at affordable prices. I would avoid the steel cased Russian stuff Not so much because of the steel, but because of the powders they use. They tend to leave more sooty residue than other ammo.
Defense? Speer Gold Dot. Take your choice of weight epending on the mission. Home defense - 185's. Summer - I would consider the 200 gr +P. The 230 gr will penetrate deeply for odd angle shots and through heavy clothing or meat/fat, but it will also penetrate less desirable media like sheet rock.
