Default 7x57 mauser reloads

Just picked up a sportsterized 96 mauser. I have never reloaded this caliber before and was wondering about bullet selection. I know the vel is slower than 7mag but is it fast enough to get reliable expantion? I was thinking about partition bullets in 130-150 grains.

Nosler Partitions do not have the best reputation for accuracy. I load primarily 139/140's for my 7 X 57's. Nice balance between velocity and sectional density. The old 7 is plenty for elk/moose with 175's as long as the range is kept reasonable.

Probably more Elephants taken with 7 X 57 than any other cartridge.

Thanks for the info about the partitions, I'll look into a few other hunting bullets before I break down and buy a 1000. Any specific brands/types that you recomend? I'll probably get 3-4 50 round boxes of diffrent brands and find out what the old girl likes before settling in a hunting load.
PS most of my hunting is whitetail and antelope. so ultra penetration is not the goal here.

Mine are just fun guns. I have no real expectations of supreme accuracy ou tof them so I have never tried to wring the best possible load. I use mostly Hornaday middle weights and load about 1-2 grains under book max and they shoot great. Minute of beer can at 100 works for me.

My 7x57 prefers Hornady 154 grain and Speer 160 grain bullets. It will shoot the 120's and 139's ok, but it is much more accurate with the heavier bullets. I haven't tried 175 grains in it, but I suspect it will shoot them ok. That's one of the good things about the 7x57 round; there really isn't a bad load for it.

I had 2 older 7x57's and I used 160 gr partitions for hunting. They shot pretty good.

Extreme acuracy isn't needed. Most of my hunting shots are under 300 yards(antelope) and the deer hunting rarely needs a shot more than 200. At these ranges i shouldn't have much vel dropoff. Just need a round that will deliver sub 2" at 100 yards and still mushroom well in the 2200-2500 fps range. I am currently leaning toward the gameking bullet in 140 grain, seems to do what i need without breaking the bank. Anyone have experince with this combo?

Haven't hunted in a very long time, but gents I shoot with on a regular basis at range do hunt. Pretty sure they all like the Game Kings for hunting and find them pretty good for the target shooting we do together.

Just tried the 140 game kings out at the range today. Starting load varget powder and federal primers, group 2.25 " at 100 yards. 2 grain increase 1.75", everything else the same. 1 more grain grouped 1.3" at 100 yards. This was the sweet spot as any faster opened the groups up. Now to play with seating depth next...
Definitely on the right track here, thanks for the feedback gentlemen.
