If you load one round in the magazine (it should click in even if long) you are still utilizing the "controlled feed" aspect of the bolt and will not damage the extractor. I would never advocate loading one round into the breach and slamming the bolt closed on it.

I have a 1916 Spanish Mauser in 7 X 57 that likes 175's. I use 41 gr's of H4350 and 43 gr's of IMR 4831 with great success. Those are fairly light loads that will have your 175 moving at about 2200 fps. It'll work good at 100 yds. just for killing paper.
