Do any of you guys have first hand experience with this round? What are the pros and cons?
Im asking because im looking into getting a saiga and keeping it in the car possibly AK it out.

Used to be tons of surplus stuff for this all over. Now... nothing. Unless you just cant live without an ak pattern gun i would skip it for something chambered in 223/556 or 7.62x39.

There is no ready source of reloadable brass that i know of and that kinda kills loading for it. Same issue with the 7.62x39 and x54r rounds too.

I do load for the 7.62x54r but i only have about 100 cases for it and finding good bullets is a pain. I cant imagine that would be different for the x39.

Name a cheap rifle that will take down a coyote.. like real cheap. I have a pos work car so Im not looking at anything expensive

I have a SAR2, (AK-74 ) in 5.45. I bought two cases (4 cans,2016 rounds) of surplus 7N6 military penetrator ammo from AIM surplus. I also have a Russian "Kobra" red dot sight on it.


It's totally reliable, like any other AK, amazingly accurate for an AK, (2 MOA) and almost zero recoil, and a blast to shoot.
Jon is right about reloadfing components, but since this caliber is "standard issue" for the Russians, you'll always be able to find ammo somewhere.

"Standard issue" for the Russians but almost no one else. All it takes is an executive order to ban the importation of "cop killer" Russian ammo. It happened with the Chinese ammo, remember? W/o a Russian supply line the cheap ammo will dissapear. Some US manufacturers MAY fill in the gap, but will undoubtedly be much more expensive.

I thought long and hard about this very issue some years ago and decided to opt out. In the absense of a "Red Dawn" scenario, ammo will be an issue.

Im really torn right now since that saiga is on 380 bucks and s 1000 rounds is what around 150ish?

I would say if you want the 5.45 buy it. If surplus ammo dries up, there will always be someone who will offer reloading components.

And stock up on that cheap surplus ammo. I did.

If you are worried about the ammo you can get the Saiga in 5.56/223.

Buy two cases and you're set for a good while.
