45 ammo

I just bought my first 1911 in 45ca. Shopping around for hp ammo I notice there is 45 auto and 45 auto+p. what's the difference? Can I shoot both? I have just a standard colt government model.

+P means it is loaded to pressures, higher than standard SAAMI specifcations. You may want to know what weight of recoil spring you are currently running, and try a slightly heavier spring to prevent excessive battering of the frame. I wouldn't shoot +P for target shooting, or out of a vintage WW2 era pistol.

Congrats on the purchase and Yes, you can shoot both. Most stick with the 230 ball ammo
and most reload to that spec or a bit lighter. You can handload from 700 fps to 1000 fps. Factory ball is around 800-850 fps. the hotter the load ,the more abuse the gun has to put up with..Plenty of videos on takedown and cleaning.
+P in hollow point makes a good defense round.

Thanks for the info guys. One guy at my LGS said my gun could blow up. But the guy that sold me the gun also sold me some hollow point +p so I was confused. I'm just looking for a good ammo for carry.

+P ammo should not make any .45 auto in good shape "blow up". It will result in wear on the gun being faster. You will not want to shoot a lot of it without going to a stiffer recoil spring.

Some HP ammo IS +P. Usually marked on the box, and the cartridge case head. Attachment 136312

Also going to cost a lot more than plain Jane 230 gr round nosed standard ammo. But as said, what makes it +P is that it is loaded to higher pressures than standard ammo.

Most important characteristic of self defense ammo is that YOUR pistol feeds, fires, extracts and ejects that round 100.00000% of the time. Some guns don't like HP, some don't like SOME HP, etc.

If the guy that said it would blow your pistol up works at the shop, find another gun shop. That is a doofus.

It was time for a new signature. This is what you get.

No.

Usually we drink it.

Good deal that makes sense now. That was at a bigger store when the guy told me that. The reason I go there is bc they usually have any ammo I need. I do most of my business at a local ma and pop place. Where would be a good place to pick up a stiffer recoil spring?

Your LGS is usually the WORST place in town to get gun info. Minimum wage doophi that don't know jacksh!t. (There are exceptions, of course)
