45

Can a 45 ACP cartrage be fired in a revolver or lever action rifle that are chambered for 45 Colt?

General-Logic 04-21-2010 12:58 AM

NO. Don't.

Meaning fire what the weapon is designed to fire. No substitutions unless approved by the manufacturer. Good way to be injured literally in a flash.

I would have to say no!!! ( let me temper my thought and state my case. ( I have been reloading for only a short time so I may be all wrong ) this could get me in lot's of trouble.)

The first thing that raises a flag is head spacing issues :
the OACL of a 45 acp ( 1.275 max ) vs the colt 45 ( 1.600 max )

The second thing is chamber dimensions. Just because one round may share certain caliber descriptions does not mean they will chamber in your gun, and should they chamber does not mean it is safe to do so. Example: 38 special will chamber in a 357 Mag. but a 357 mag. will not chamber into a 38 special, and is so designed.

Interesting question though, and it all boils down to SAFETY!

I hope others chime in and offer there thoughts on the matter, those with more technical expertise then I.
I would hate to have someone hurt because they tried this.

NO! and besides the obvious:

,,,,,,^ .45 ACP........VS........^ .45 Colt (Long Colt)

They are two totally different cartridges.

.45 ACP
Case type Rimless, straight
Bullet diameter .452 in (11.5 mm)
Neck diameter .473 in (12.0 mm)
Base diameter .476 in (12.1 mm)
Rim diameter .480 in (12.2 mm)
Case length .898 in (22.8 mm)
Overall length 1.260 in (32.0 mm)

.45 Long Colt
Case type Rimmed, straight
Bullet diameter .454 (lead), .451 (jacketed)
Neck diameter .480 in (12.2 mm)
Base diameter .480 in (12.2 mm)
Rim diameter .512 in (13.0 mm)
Rim thickness .060 in (1.5 mm)
Case length 1.285 in (32.6 mm)
Overall length 1.600 in (40.6 mm)

The .45 ACP is a rimless cartridge and the .45 Long Colt is rimmed.

Although I've never tried it, the engineer in me says the .45 ACP would probably "fall" into the chamber and therefore be out of reach of the firing pin.

I have no empirical data on this and NEVER intend to collect any!

Thanks Canebrake!

Okay, thanks guys, you convinced me. I was looking for another reason to justify buying a 45 - 1911 style hip hog.

Ruger does/did make a 45Colt/.45Auto convertible with 2 cylinders. One takes 45 ACP and a cylinder for 45 Colt. Ruger Page Not Found

Ruger Blackhawk 45 colt convertible w/45acp cylinder.
If you have a Ruger 45 Colt, Ruger can and will fit a 45 ACP cylinder to it.
