Default 44 Magnums

I've finally gotten a hold of a quality made 44 magnum. I dont buy a gun I dont intend on using, so that being said I would like to know about downlaoding 44 magnums for it. These loads will be for a 4" Smith and Wesson 629-1. I know a steady diet of full-house magnum rounds will make it drop out of time quicker tha most in some cases, so I figured I'd look for some low end magnum loads and shoot factory only periodically just for fun.
I'm eyeballing some 300 grain semi-jacketed flat nosed bullets to use for moderate to factory spec loadings but I havent settled on anything yet.

So I was wondering if you guys would share some 44 magnum loadings that are good for 629 S&W?

I am not a reloaded by any means but one of my good friends does it. There is a book out there called" lymans reloading handbook number 49". Im sure they have a number 50 out already lol but anyway inside this book they show you different types of loads for ALL sorts of ammunition even the. 44 magnum. They show you different powders that can be used as well as different bullet grains, also it highlights which powder works better out of all of the options. Like I said I don't know much about reloading but you might be able to find this book already on the internet for free or find it used through the android book store or amazons website. Sorry I couldn't be much help

I would not use 300 gr bullets in the Smith. Stick to 240 gr or lighter. If you want to launch the heavies, get a Ruger. A 240 gr SWC at 1000 fps is very tame.

Use load data for 44 special. You can fire 44 special out of a 44 magnum same way you can 38 special out of a 357 magnum.

One caveat if your using 44 magnum cases and 44 spl data use 44 magnum oal same is true of downloading 357mag.

+1 on this post. 240 for stopping power and 180 for plinking. That's what I do. .300's will sooner than later break the gun.

I was kind of wondering if that would work. I handload for my 45acp and did load for the two 357 mags for my parents revolvers. The 357s seemed a bit easier to do for some reason. I think its because there are no recoil springs to take into account.
I'm used to playing around in the normal handload parameters instead of having to really down play the power factor in any of my ammo until now.

One thing I'm not certain about is the primers. What are the pros and cons of using 'magnum' primers vs typical primers?

Appreciate the feedback guys, I still have to find a place to shoot but I want to get my reloading stuff together and make some sample loads for when I do. I moved to the greater Denver area just recently, and the prices are god awful for the nearby ranges. I miss my $5 a session pice already

I use magnum primers for everything. 44 Special loads in 44 mag cases work great. I load 240 grain lead over 5.0 grains of titegroup. Very nice target load. No where near magnum power.

I use Titegroup for my target/plinking loads, and H110 for my full power stuff.
Like others have said, stick with 240gr or less for lighter recoil.

I use 300/325gr hard cast for my hunting stuff, and they'll let you know it's a magnum your shooting.
