Recently I havent seen cheap .40 for less than $20 a box but a few months ago it was about $13-$15 for WWB. Stupid panic buyers.

Some have to problem feeding Steel cased ammo in their guns. I see it as a but insulting to my investments. An AK is made for steel cased 7.62 X 39. You can run 87 octane gas in a Corvette and PROBABLY not damage it, by why risk it.

The Winchester White Box is decent, if not spectacular. Ditto for the Wally World Federal stuff. I used Remington UMC in other calibers, I would assume that is good to go in .40 as well. Practice/range ammo doesn't need to be particularly brilliant, it just needs to work reasonably well.
For full strength carry ammo I have used Winchester Personal Protection (White Box Hollow Points), Federal Hydrashocks & Winchester Ranger.
If it cycles reliably in your pistol, that's 95% of the battle. Beyond that, much of the hype about what ammo is best is marketing and other related BS. (IMHO) I'm of the opinon that if you center punch Mr. Badguy with a bullet designed for SD use, the brand of ammo won't be high on his list of priorities. Shot placement is more important than the number of capital letters strung together in the name of the ammo or the coolest overall name.
I hate to say it, but a lot of the time ammo choices are dictated by what you can find, not necessarily by what you'd prefer. With the feeding frenzy going on right now, you may just have settle for what's in stock.
