.35 Whelen is a fine cartridge. The 9.3x62 came out, 12 years earlier. Both are intended for Large, heavy game. The Whelen falls short in the fact it is max bullet is 250 gr. W/ a heavier bullet at a lower velosity would give it better penetration at close distance. I feel comfortable w/ a 9.3x57, which is below the Whelen in 250gr bullet velosity, not by much, but w/ a 286gr Partition brings a world of hurt to game at 100 yards. BTW, these are not, and were never intended to be distance cartridges. They are not Lasers, but more like a potato chucker. Although you can shoot a 180gr out of a .35 Whelen, the ballistics suck. The heavier the better. Get close and it will hit like the hammer of Thor.
