.35 whelen
Anbody use this cartridge? What is it good for? Factory ammo prices? Reloading range narrow or wide? Any info would help specialy balistics

Some of my nephew's friends use this in single shot rifles to participate in Mississippi's "primitive weapon season" for deer.

I've heard it's making a bit of a comeback. Something about .30 remington influencing a revival somehow.

Huh alrite cool thats good news im lookin at gettin a mauser project goin with the .35 whelen and hell if its comin back the reloads are good n factory ammo is few i may do it

It is supposedly a comparatively flat-shooting round with decent range for MS deer hunting.
The "primitive" thing is irritating some people to the point that many have said it should just be "single shot season". I blame inline BP rifles for greasing the slippery slope.

The .35 Whelen has a cult following. It is a very efficient cartridge and fairly easy to load for. .30-06 brass can be necked up to .358 as the cartridge is based on the -06 case.
Factory ammo is a little pricier than premium -06 ammo and more difficult to find. For the reloader, light plinking loads can be made with bullets for the .357 Mag. Heavy, hard hitting loads of 250 gr bullets can work well on large game including elk and black bears. I would prefer something more powerful for the big brown or polar bears.

For some reason Americans have never taken to the .358 or 9mm rifle cartridges. They are really great rounds. The 35 Rem never really competed with the 30-30. The 358 Winchester never made it big and the 35 Whelen which was around a long time as a wildcat never got a big following. There was also the 35 Rem Mag and the 358 Norma Mag. There are a couple of local shooters that have rifles chambered in 35 Whelen but they are pretty scarce. The guys that have them love them.

I don't have a .35 Whelen yet, but I plan to someday. It falls kinda between the big bore lever gun cartridges (.375 Win, .444 Marlin, .45-70) and non magnums like the .30-06, .308, and .270.
With a 250 gr bullet at 2500 fps mv, it should work for any North American game animal out to about 150 or 200 yards, longer for deer-sized critters.
I think it would be perfect for someone who wants one rifle to "do-it-all" but doesn't want to put up with the recoil of a .338 or .375 magnum.
It's probably at its best for hand loaders, as factory loads aren't common or cheap.
