.308 vs 30-06 vs .270

So far, I have narrowed it down to three choices. Rank those cartridges from best to worst.

I bought a .270. So far that's my number 1.

How easy is it to find the ammo and how much does it usually cost?

What do you plan on doing with this gun? Hunting? Target Shooting only? Do you reload, or have intentions in doing so down the road?

For me the 30.06 is the best of the 3 for a bolt action rifle that can do all things well. There is so much variations in bullet weights to hunt pretty much anything in north america. Sure there are better guns for doing a specific task, but the 30.06 can do them all, well. The 270 is a flatter shooting gun, but doesn't pack as much weight in bullets to take on larger game than the 30.06 can.
The 308 is just behind the 30.06 for me.

I think that the 30-06 is the most versatile of the three. You can go from really light to really heavy loads. Also there is a lot of different loads to choose from. But any of them would be a fine choice.

And all three calibers are popular and can be found at Wal-Mart and any sporting goods store (until this crap happened in November and December)

270 would be the mildest recoiling cartridge, but all of the cartridges mentioned are flat shooting. I would have to say that 270 is the easiest to find and generally it's around $1 a round. 30-06 would be second, it is popular but is generally easy to find. 308 is the hardest to find right now because it is a round that is typically used in ARs as well as bolt action rifles. For an all around cartridge that has a variety of bullet weights I would go with the 30-06. It is a widely known caliber that has been around for a long time.

I plan on hunting white tailed deer and target shooting. I might try to start realizing when I get a lot older.

Unless you are hunting for Moose, get the 270. In order of personal prefference 270, 30-06 and maybeeeee the 308. Personal opinoin, the other two will make the 308 a non-contender.

1. 270
2. 308
3. 30-06

I put .270 as number 1 because it will do everything and is the lightest recoiling. I ranked 30-06 low because I can't handle the recoil of a 30-06 with 2 torn rotator cuffs. .270 I can handle just fine.
