.308 Ammo.

Will Someone Tell Me If All 308 Ammo Is Also 7.62 X 51

Yes thy are slightly different. As the 308 win is loaded to a higher pressure than the 7.62x51mm. You can shoot 7.62 in 308 but can't shoot 308 in a 7.62.

It is just the reverse of of the 223 556 problem.

is that right ? should i not be using 5.56 in my .223 all appears ok ?

The conventional wisdom is that the Military 5.56 has a higher chamber pressure than the civilian .223. While the round will fit the chamber and go bang, you are running a risk. If you have a 5.56 chamber, you can run the lower pressure .223 civilian version without much danger, you will just see an accuracy difference.

Your mileage may vary...

Anyone have any idea why they didn't just standardize these rounds ? The Performance of the rounds the differences aren't worth talking about while yes the pressures are for safety .

Big - Someone, and I can't remember if it's this forum or another one I visit, had posted the specs on the two rounds, side by side, and there were minor differences.

As to why no one standardized it, I would assume if you look hard enough there will be some stupid lawyer who had some piece of paper that said "no you can't" for the given time of implimentation, and probably nothing more.

It sure would be nice to get one standardized round today though - since this topic comes up, at least, once a week.... LOL

OK the point goes to you .

Let me rephrase the question , does anyone know why they didn't decide on one of the two rounds and simply discontinue the other ?

Just what exactly in practical performance is the difference ?
