Default .30-06 die converted to .30-30 - is there a way?

Howdy, All.

Just getting into reloading and finding it fairly addictive. I have the dies for all of my different calibers with the exception of one: .30-30

I recently inherited a .30-06 die set, but do not own a .30-06. Therefore, I am wondering if there is a way to convert the .30-06 die to a .30-30. Remember, I am a neophyte here – hence the reason for [possibly] this dumb question. I’ve searched the forum as well as I could, but found nothing to speak of, so-to-speak.

Thanks!

Chris

I believe the short answer is no. It will do a great job on .30-06 cases tho. List it for sale or trade or set it aside (itd be a good reason to buy a .30-06).

I like your way of thinking - I just need a .30-06!

It may be possible to use it(I have not checked for myself). You obviously could not full length resize the cases but the 30-30 case might be long enough to neck size in the 30/06 die. If you are using cases that you shot in your gun you only need to neck-size anyway. And the bullet seater would be long enough to seat the bullets I'm pretty sure. So the answer is possibly yes.

Sell or trade them and get a proper set before you hurt yourself!
When reloading you're dealing with very high pressures and seeing as how you're just getting started, get started on the right path! In Twenty years or so then get creative.

A new set of 30-30 dies would be a whole lot cheaper than the cost of getting the 06 dies machined to work if they even would work for a 30-30.

Actually Hiwall is probably right. But I would think that after a few shots the case would get pretty tight in the chamber.

You can get a set of dies for the 30-30 for about $30. Might as well bite the bullet...so to speak. If you reload a couple boxes of 30-30 the dies will have paid for themselves. It's really a no-brainer.

No for the main reasons of

The 30-06 is 2.494" long.
The 30-06 has a neck that is .358" long.
The 30-06 has a shoulder angle is 17*.

The 30-30 is 2.040" long.
The 30-30 has a neck that is .478" long.
The 30-30 has a shoulder angle that is 15*

It would not simply be a cut down a die on a lathe you would have to cut it and use a chamber reamer to cut then use a finish reamer to finish the die.
