What is the difference when plinking with these rounds?

Slight difference in muzzle velocity, snappier recoil on the 165 gr. Beyond that no difference...they are both equally effective at punching holes in paper.

Practice with what you plan to carry...the follow up shot is the key so know the recoil and practice controlling it, especially in a .40 S&W which has a reputation for a stiffer recoil than both 9mm and .45 ACP.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say about 15 grains and maybe 100 fps. JK

Not a great deal of difference for paper punching.
