Default winchester model1897

I got this old winchester 97 last week after a lot of dickering. Solid wood..no cracks. Metal has turned to a silver grey patina. Receiver and barrel have matching numbers..dates to 1905. Buttplate numbers to the stock. Has 30" barrel-full choke. My gunsmith checked it out and found a very-and I mean very small dent about 3" from the end of the barrel. Bore has a very nice shine to it. Gunsmith said it is safe to shoot with low brass target/trap loads.I gave $325..the best I could do.I think I did ok. Tried to do attachments but won't work..they won't attach to the post.

I have been having issues with posting picture for the last couple of weeks. I just figured it was on my end even though it does the same on all 3 of my computers. When I hit the paperclip sometimes I get the manage attachments box and sometimes I don't. If I refresh then sometimes I can get the box to pop up and sometimes no. Also after I upload the pictures and do the preview I can't see the pictures, only a box with a red x in the middle but when I submit the pictures are there. Go figure. Btw the 1897 is a cool shotgun. I have one but I paid more than $325 for it.

Congrats on a great old gun and for my part of the country a great price. A '97 in that condition would probably go for closer to $500.00 in Okla.

I grew up hunting with a solid frame '97, ducks, doves and rabbits. Graduated to a take down '97 and then foolishly traded it for an 870 Remington. Still have the solid frame. I don't think I would use steel shot in the old girl but you could sure knock them out at the skeet fields.

Your gun smith should have told you that these old girls have short chambers. Modern plastic shells stick in the chamber. They will eject but over stress the extractor and break them off. The front of the chamber needs to be reamed to accommodate Star crimped plastic.
