A fella has offered me a Winchester Defender as a partial trade on one of my guns. I don't have a HD shotgun so I'm interested. What's the scoop on these?
Here's a pic of it... |

It's a model 1300 isn't it? They're great shotguns. I've got a 1300 Turkey that has never given me the slightest hint of a problem in the 16 years I've had it. I've been using it as a HD gun for years but wouldn't mind finding a defender like you're looking at. What are you trading for it? __________________ If the pain is lacking so is the discipline...

The fella wants my Commander and is trying to put a trade together along with some cash. He actually wants to throw in the old security-six snubbie that's in the picture as well. What do you reckon the "trade" value is for the Defender in the picture? |

1200/1300s usually go for around $300ish. If you stayed in that ballpark you'd be safe. Defenders tend to bring a little more from what I've seen and not all of them have the 8 shot mag like that one.
1200/1300s are very versitle shotguns and IMO, better then an 870 any day of the week. You might want to get with robocop10mm, I think he's a big 1200/1300 fan and probably knows a little more then I do. __________________ If the pain is lacking so is the discipline...

Winchester's Defender models are well worth the money. Winchester is known to have the fastest pump action of all the shotgun MFGs. Depends on which model you have pictured to determine actual value. Win. 1300 Defender w/ synthetic stocks sell for 300 bucks or less on Gunbroker.com. Yours has a wood stock so the value is higher than the same model w/ black synthetic. The Defender models have no issues. Very reliable, dependable, great action, etc. Goes bang when it needs to. Robocop10mm has the most knowledge with Winchester shotguns in this forum so I'll let him comment further. |

Thanks folks. The fella set the trade value at around $300 so he's in the ballpark. I await Robo's comments as he's probably used one to club a BG or something... |

I would never use a fine firearm for a bludgeon. totaly disrespectful to the firearm. As others have said the Defender is a very good shotgun. I have a 1200 Defender that I bought in about 1981 or so. The only drawback is there are limited aftermarket accessories available. You can change out stocks to various synthetics and add a Side Saddle (recommended). Barrels are not interchangeable with the other (5 shot tube) Winchesters or FN's because of the long tube.
In my experience, the Winchester barrel is many times stronger than the 870. __________________ In life, strive to take the high road....It offers a better field of fire.

Thanks for the opinion Robo.
I worked out a trade for the Defender and the Security-Six snubbie (no, not the Colt) so they'll be coming home tonight. I had a Security-Six years ago and it was a great revolver, always wanted the 2 3/4 inch version... |

Sounds like a good trade. What are you going to load your new HD gun with? __________________ If the pain is lacking so is the discipline...

Spitty, where I can I always try to get some ammo in the deal so the Defender is coming with 3 boxes of 00 buck. I have plenty of .357 for the Ruger... |
