Default Will this damage my barrel?

I have a 870 12 gauge and have the stock field barrel (long) and a deer slug barrel that is smooth bore (short). I am tired of using the longer barrle while rabbit hunting and going through dense brush. So my question, is it ok if I use my shorter deer barrel with game shot? Will it mar the inside of the barrel causing it to be inacurate when I deer hunt with slugs?

If you are using a smooth bore barrel, any smaller shot load should work fine. #4 or #6 shot for rabbits would be safe to use. You may have more open patterns due to the lack of choke though, so you may not have as mush reach as what you were used to with the longer barrelif it has a tighter choke.

What they just said right there ^^^. With modern shotshells, shot does not touch the bore at all- is in a plastic shotcup.

I dont know why they call them slug barrels when the are cylinder bore. Slugs do better in a choked barrel like improved or even modified. The short cylinder bore barrels are really meant for home defense and buckshot. I know of people that have 18' barrels with a polychoke added on. Dial in your choke.

If you have the same 870 barrel set that I do (both are non rifled) your slug barrel will be an improved cylinder. It will not harm the barrel if you use shot in it. You will just have to take closer shots.

That is interesting. Mine was cylinder with rifle sights. That was on the 870, the Mossberg 500 and the Benelli Nova.

Ok thanks everyone. I know kind of a silly question? But I wanted to be sure before I did it.

You'd have felt more stupid if it was not ok and you jacked up your barrel because you didn't ask.
