Yes that is true. Logically one would think that the 12 would throw a much wider pattern than the .410. But, because the .410 deforms much of its shot, the pattern really spreads out and is acutally wider. It is not as dense nor as effective as the 12, 16, or 20. In fact the pattern of the .410 is not even and is full of holes. Within its limits and fired by an experienced shotgunner, it can be useful for close ranges such as game farm quail. And, there is a .410 division in skeet.
