Along the line of the Browning but less expensive but just as good of quality is the Ithaca 37. They are now back in production. They are also a bottom eject with different models available.

I agree with this but I shoot both and though the moss is a bit heavier i like it better due to the ergonomics. The safety and slide release are in better locations.

Different? yes; better? not, for me and lots of others - like 10 million. Try them both and see which you prefer. It is your money after all.

Back in production? Yes. The same animal? NOT EVEN CLOSE!

i think you might have it backwards. my 12 ga 870 is heavier then a 500 with comparable features. the 500 has an alloy frame vs the steel on an 870.

No, My Moss 500 is way heavier theN the Rem 870. or at least the ones i shot at work. Ive got a winchester defender that weighs about the same as an 870 IMO. And as far as the locations i spoke of, how do you figure that the location of the slide release on an 870, in front of the trigger guard, and the safety, on the back of the trigger guard are more user friendly then on the MOSS 500. THE SLIDE RELEASE IS ON THE BACK LEFT under THE TRIGGER GUARD AND THE SAFETY ON THE TOP BY YOUR THUMB MEANS MUCH MORE FLUENT OPERATION.

Look into a combo (i.e. a gun that comes with interchangeable barrels). You can keep the short barrel on it for HD and put the longer barrel on for hunting/skeet.

I'm pretty sure Rem makes an 870 model like that.

Just my 2 cents

Check to make sure the shells are not splitting. If they are the ammo is bad and it will jam up the gun.

thats odd your 500 weighs more than an 870. i never seen that before. and i like where my safety and slide release is on the 870. i also like how quick i can have my 870 torn apart then back together.
