What to shoot in old double barrels?

My dad just brought home an old LC Smith double barrel in parts, as a project. It needs a few parts, but the barrel is still good, and the reciever is in amazing condition. I know that you can't shoot modern shells in old shotguns, but can't I shoot low brass shells?

How old is it, is it a 2 1/2 in. chamber or what, does it have a damascus steel barrel, there is lots of verables, lets see some pictures...............

I can get some pics tomorrow. Its not damascus, I'm not sure of the chamber length, yet, and its from somewhere between 1910-1934, but it looks almost new. I don't know how it survived this long in such good condition.

Been through this a few times before . I own a 1889 rem SxS 12 hammer gun .
You need to measure the chamber length for one , just b.c a shell will fit dont mean anything , the forcing cones come into play '' taper at end of chamber ''
Even if it will safely take and fire new modern rounds why put the stress on the ol girl . I fire the mini shells , only about 1in long but they have a good pop .
I have a francotte knockabout also that is pretty old and worth a handsome chunk of change but I am ruthless on that gun , it was so well made I have fear of firing 2 rounds of OObuck at the same time although it will devastate your hand and shoulder .
There are some companies still making reproduction shells for these ol girls but the can be very high and sometimes hard to get .
I scored a few hundred antique paper and brass shells but I paid dearly for them and I may only fire 1 maybe once a year in the 1889 . Just be careful and respect her a bit . let us know if you need help putting it back together or locating parts , I ended up making some for mine .

LC Smith is a nice, old, classy gun. Love those side-by-sides.
Photos of it would be great.

As said, have a smith use a chamber guage to check- shells were not always 2 3/4 inches long. That gun SHOULD be in the smokeless powder era. If so, use low brass (trap) loads of the correct length, or the minis (be nice, gun has worked hard for a long time)

Opening day of dove season I put some feathers on a 99 year old Hopkins & Allen SxS. Shot very nicely, thank you!

After I had a gunsmith check it over, I ordered some 2 1/2" 20 gauge shells for my antique Ithaca (Flues) from these folks:

http://www.polywad.com/guide.html

They have number of options, but the Vintager & Doublewide are specifically designed for older guns.
Service/shipping was exemplary. Product appears excellent (Vintager 2 1/2" w/ 7 1/2 shot). Prices, while not bargain basement, seem reasonable to me. Sadly, I have yet to get a chance to shoot them.

The shotgun in question:

I like low brass loads for the old timers. Many will take more powerful loads easily, but why put unnecessary wear and tear on an old veteran?

Ask Joey Biden, he knows.

Cause its an old double barrel in good shape, and modern day double barrels are rare under $500. It needs a lot o parts
