I have a new mossberg 500 field with 3 chokes(thanks for the help on here helping me decide I needed another gun besides the HD version I have). We have been shooting jack rabbits and ground hogs out here. My buddies gun (remington camo/walmart) with modified choke peppers those ground hog mounds when he shots with a modified choke. Mine, not so much unless I use the full choke. Maybe I'm aiming to high though. I have shot a jack rabbit about 20 yards further than the security model would have reached so I'm happy with it.
Mainly wondering, what choke you all use for this type of varmits.
Also, for doves and ducks. |

Modified is good for hunting. Also, may want to focus more on the type of ammo you're using.
Me personally, I only have a modified choke and never needed anything else for varmints. Probably will pick up an improved cylinder for deer season, but other than that I like modified.

I know the OP is a little old, but I wanted to bring it up again.
What kind of shot size/choke tube combo do you guys use for ducks and geese?
I've been using a #4 with a modified choke (for ducks), but I'm thinking about mixing it up a little this year.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For waterfowl I normally use a full choke designed for non-toxic shot. There are specialty chokes designed for waterfowl, turkey, etc, but make sure you can shoot steel shot out of them if that's what the law requires. __________________ God, Family, Guns, in that order. |

Thanks Hunter Joe......I do have to use non toxic shot here too.
I did just get a full choke. And thats what I'm gong to try out Wednesday morning.
What size shot do you use? Do you use Steel or Tungsten? Or another material? __________________ It's like paradise on Earth, enriched with the ever so sweet nectar of

How can you justify shooting deer with such a wide pattern. __________________ I may not agree with what you say but will defend with my life your right to say it. ( Voltaire )

I used Ts, BBB, No.2 and I prefer tungsten iron or bismuth over steel. Bismuth is closer to lead that the other two, not as hard and a little denser, making it more effective on waterfowl IMHO. At any rate, it's all very expensive. Good luck and God bless, Joe __________________ God, Family, Guns, in that order. |
