Default Went skeet / trap shooting for the first time!

My best friend and I both recently purchased our very first shotguns. Mine an inexpensive Chinese made, double barrel coach gun imported by Century Arms, 12 gauge, 20 inch barrel. My best friend bought a Rock Island M5 pump action.

We went out to a local skeet / trap range where we not only had an amazingly fun time but we also learned the subtle difference between skeet and trap!

My coach gun wasn't very accurate, I wasn't expecting it to be. Her Rock Island M5 was much more accurate. Any suggestions for affordable, accurate shotguns?
I enjoyed shooting my friends M5 so much I bought one, nickel finish.

any gun with a full choke for trap will work. any gun with IC, SKT, or CYL choke for skeet will work.
gun doesnt matter. its your choice of choke that makes you a good shot at those games.
and too, a low recoil ammo choice. 1oz or less.

what state are you from?

I'm from Washington state. I'm active duty army. We have a great skeet / trap range on base.

I always put off buying a shotgun because I figured I wouldn't shoot it that much, boy was I wrong.

Thanks for the good info, I'll look into the choke.

if you play golf trap is the driving range skeet is the putting green and sporting is the entire 18 holes! 5 stand is kinda like a par 3 corse

They are essentially the same. Skeet refers to sporting clays that fly from left to right or right to left of the shooter, whereas trap refers to shooting at sporting clays that fly directly away from in front of the hooter.

Experts, did I get that correct?

skeet is shot under 21 yards. trap can go out to 30 - 40yds and more. when you stand on the 16yd line in trap, thats the distance to the front of the trap bunker. by the time you hit the target, it can be way out there! as you get better, you get handicapped. thats what the sidewalk is for. way back there its the 27yd line....to the front of the bunker!

Sporting Clays is a completely different game than Trap or Skeet. You shoot clay pigeons in all three, but in Sporting Clays you also shoot minis, and rabbit discs and there are stations with all kinds of different presentations. To be really good at Trap seems to me to be much more of a mental challenge, and the ability to concentrate over a looooong period of time. Knocking off one or two 24s or 25s isn't that tough for me, but I can't go the long haul. I love Skeet and like Sporting Clays, except for those courses with a couple of really gimmick stands to let the locals excel. 5 Stand is sort of like Sporting Clays without the walking (or carts). You change between 5 different stand locations and shoot at a variety of targets.
You sound like you have caught the bug already. It can be a long fun trip, and there's no limit on clay pigeons. Once you get good, a proper gun can help you to do better, but you do not need a $20,000 Over and Under to do very well. It's the Indian far more than the bow. Hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
