VFG on a pump action?

For self defense purposes I have been thinking about putting a vertical fore grip and a flashlight on my Remington 870 but have heard that a vertical fore grip can warp and twist the action bars. Is there any truth to this?

It sure could if you tweak it to the side. Simple leverage.
