I disagree. I have had a mossberg 500 and an 870 express. i prefer the 870 express. Very reliable.

Get a rem 887 got mine a month ago and shot it 50 time aright out of the box and nothing whent wrong! It's buy far my favorite shotgun and well worth the cash lol.

To each his own. Some may have had problems with the 870, some may have not. I personally do not like it for my own reasons but I don't think you could really go wrong with one. Although I must say though, their quality has certainly dropped in the past of couple years. Your mileage may vary.

I have owned both the 500 and the 870. The 500 had pistol grips fore and aft and an 18 1/2" barrel with heat shield. I bought it with the slug barrel and wood stock also (maxi Combo). It handled very well in short and long form without a hiccup. The 870 has the Knoxx stock and a super Turkey choke. Again, works very well and never a goof. With these two choice I dont think you can make a mistake....I wish I still had the Winchester 1100 gas op I traded in way back when.

I own a 500. She is a bad girl! Everyone stares when I take her to the range. I'm looking to add either the Stoeger double defense over under, or the double defense coach gun. Any thoughts or info I should know about?

I have an 870 and it's a good gun,have had no problems with it since I got it about 2 years ago.But as a rule of thumb,the 870's,with their steel recievers,classic safety and debris guard/loading gate are really meant to be a woodsmans gun and right at home firing slugs all day long,but also doubles as a great house/defensive gun.The Mossberg 500 is the opposite-with it's light aluminum reciever,open loading chamber and easy thumb safety,it's main purpose is to be a defensive/LEO gun that doubles as a good woodsman's gun.
