Tactical shotgun? Recommendations?

i'm looking into getting one and ive checked out some of them from mossberg and such but i still don't really know what to get. it would be for home protection and i plan on mounting a 30mm red dot scope on it.
any recommendations please?
thanks!

Can you narrow the field down a little? What are you looking for? Good home defense? A solid performer that will fire everytime? Do you want a 12 guage? A 20? What kind of budget are you on?

It's a big subject - so to get the best answers we need a little more info from you...

good home defense
12 guage

An 18" 870E or Mossberg 500 18" will run about 300. Both are good choices. I ditched my Tactical 870 and bought a Glock 23, a little better for clearing rooms and such. I still have my shorty shotty though, an 18" 12g Coach Gun.

I had purchased a Mossberg maverick 88 for around 215.00 new. Came with the pistol grip and the regular rifle stock. It also has the 6+1 capacity, and the 18.5 barrel. I have ran about 500 rounds through it so far with no problems. It was not as "slick" as I would hoped a pump gun would be, but after an hour or so I had it shuckin' shells like it was supposed to.

just curious if you guys did anything to it
like mount a red dot scope?
and if you did what would you recommend?

Why a red dot? Just one more thing to deal with, and Murphy knows all about anything
that runs on batteries.

Big ghost ring. Tritium. http://www.xssights.com/store/shotgun.html

You aren't target shooting here---it's across the room max.

Remington has an 870 package with 20 in bbl and a mag extension. Has been a year or so since I bought mine, paid 350 for it new. HIGHLY recommend it, reliable and will handle anything you put through it. You can also pick up dirt cheap used 870s and add the mods yourself, it is an easy thing to do.
Also, your choice, but I recommend no red dot, just go with the old bead sight or a set of Wilson Ghost Rings with tritium. With just a bead sight I can hit a man sil at 100 yd with a low recoil slug with some kentucky windage, if I can you will have no problem inside close quarters. Concur with our comrades, red dot is just something else that can go wrong and you really dont need it. Good luck, bottom line is personal preference and what you can shoot well. regards

thanks everyone
i checked out some shotguns at the local gun shop
held mossberg 500 tactical with retractable stock and pistol grip and i liked it. it was $315
also held the mossberg 500 and the remington 870 and i liked those as well because they were just plain and simply shotguns.
so my next question would be pistol grip vs. regular grip i guess?
the shop guy said it was personal preference but i wanna hear your guys opinions =]
