I have never used steel shot as I do not hunt water fowl. Will steel shot hurt my new maverick 88 with 18.5 " barrel with no choke?

Why do you want use steel shot if you don't waterfowl hunt? I don't see how it would hurt the gun, I had a 3.5" Maverick 88 and used it for duckhunting until I decided it wasn't for me and sold it to a friend.

If I may ask what is the intended use of the #2 steel? Are you going to use it for home defense or just in need of some ammo to use for practice? In my honest opinion steel shot is pretty worthless, waterfowl hunters use it because they are forced to by law, otherwise they would all use lead or some modern alternative to lead, steel shot is much lighter than lead pellets and tends to have poor penetration and increased risk of ricochet. It also tends to cost more than lead.

Thanks again. I will pass on steel shot and try to find #2 in lead. I was thinking of using it for HD

I use buckshot but some worry about overpenetration with that, I don't worry about it as I have nobody living with me in other rooms at night, number 2 is also a stout load and would do the job I'm sure though it has been hard to find in my area in anything other than steel shot or 3.5" turkey loads. I think shooting through drywall is a risk one would be taking shooting any shotgun round in the house at close range anyways so I don't worry about that where shot size is concerned.

Unless you are concerned about a home invasion by Big Bird, skip the birdshot for HD. Buckshot.

Could it work? Maybe. And maybe is a VERY bad word when the answer that you need is "Oh, HELL yes!"
