Steel Shot

Hi folks

I have got a 1974 Rem 870 12 gauge with fixed mod choke barrel. Is it safe to use steel shot or will it damage the barrel. Im hoping to use it for ducks. If I can use steel shot what is the recommended largest shot size?

thanks

When you use steel shot you are using a product that is harder than some older barrels and nearly as hard as a few modern barrels. Sooner or later your bore will show the scuffs and scars where the shot has embedded in, and slipped through the slits of the wad. Since steel is not nearly as dense as lead, larger shot sizes and higher velocities are the only way to get it to perform equally. Bigger, faster, and harder pellets beating the hell out of your choke at 1500 fps is a huge amount of stress to expect your barrel to absorb.

Can you use it? Sure. Will you need a new barrel if you use it ALOT? Probably.

Just my $.02

cobra22,

If you're wanting to keep your 1974 Remington in original condition and are worried about damaging the original barrel....I suggest you get a replacement barrel and use the original receiver. The replacement barrel will be more than adequate for today's ammo. Depending on which barrel you get it could be threaded for different choke tubes.

Or you can shoot Bismuth, pretty sure it's safe for older shottys............markerdown

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I really dont want to risk damaging the original barrel so as suggested I will look in to getting another barrel. Any suggestions as to where I should look for a new barrel

You know, Remington has a web site. They say any Remington barrel made since 1950, with modified or less choke, is okay for steel up to size #2.
