It's always a good idea to get advice from several different places, even if you're pretty sure you already know the answer.

There's an old adage that two heads are better than one. And twenty are better thyan two!

I might be thinking wrong, but doesn't a star on your barrel mean it will shoot 3" or less and no star is 2.75" only?

Star does not indicate shell lebgth. SOME shotguns use a * or ** to indicate choke.

OK- read this carefully-

3 inch shotshells ARE magnums. An UNFIRED 3 inch shell WILL chamber in a 2 3/4 shotgun. It is unsafe to fire them.

At this moment I am holding a shell marked 2 3/4 ", and a metal ruler. The unfired shell is right at 2 and ONE quarter inches long. When fired, it will be 2 3/4 inches long.

When a shotshell is fired, the front end unfolds. Notice how a fired shell is longer than an unfired shell? A 3 inch shell in a 2 3/4 chamber does not have room between front of shell and forcing cone for the shell to unfold. It tries to unfold into the cone and barrel. Not enough room, so shot and power piston get squeezed. Pressures jump WAY up.

Cliff's notes version- do not use ammo longer than what is marked on the gun. If it says 3 inch, you can shoot 3 inch or 2 3/4s.

I agree, the guy is full of it, I agree with c3, stick with the shell length, don't worry about whether it's a 3" or a 3" magnum, if its a 3" gun I'd say ur good to go.

The term "Magnum" in a shotshell has a different meaning than in centerfire metallic cartridges. A Magnum shotshell has a larger/heavier payload than a standard shot shell.

C3 is entirely correct. A 12ga shotgun chambered for 3 1/2" shells IS a magnum shotgun. There is no such animal as a 3" non-magnum shotshell.

Tony- most .410 autoloaders are gas operated. I have an 1100 Light Field in .410, has that same marking- 3 inch plastic only. The gas system is set up to run on the gas produced by the 3 inch shell. Has to do with number and size of holes in the piston, not the barrel.

The 1100 can safely shoot the 2.5 inch /410, but they will not cycle properly.

When I said if gun is marked 3 inch, you can shoot 3 inch or shorter, that did not include when the word ONLY is stamped on the gun!
