#4 is way too light of a load for hog. Even 00 buck is not proper for a shoulder shot. The grissle plate in the shoulder is sometimes 1" or more thick, natural body armor. I would use slugs only on hogs.

In 2004 I took a buddy of mine turkey hunting in FL and we had an encounter with some pigs. My buddy creeped to within about 15 yards of a 100 lb pig and shot it with 3 inch 6 shot. The pig ran off, but was clearly hit. He tracked and shot it twice more with the sixes and started yelling for me to bring him some shells. The number 4's I prefer finished the job, but the range was maybe 15 feet.
The next day we acquired some 00 buck and it only took one shot to kill the second one.
My brothers and I took many a hog of various size with our 22 magnums, shooting fully jacketed bullets, back in the day. Buckshot was too risky around the dogs and large rifles are hard on dogs ears too.
However, birdshot is not the way to go. Definitely 00 or 000 buckshot is best if a rifle (or slug gun) is not an option.

Is it possible for a hog to flip you the bird? The reason I ask is that the last time I went hog hunting I shot a large South Texas Boar (shoulder area hit at about 80 yards) with my AR-15. The boar turned his head to look at me and walked out of the clearing and back into the brush. I am pretty sure he shot me the bird before he vanished into the brush. No blood trail, but I am sure I hit him solid. So next time I go hog hunting I am taking a bigger gun with a harder hitting round, maybe my M1A.

I've had the same experience twice out here, both times with my AR15. Both times were a shot of about 50 yards. No way I could have missed. They are tough ba$tards and, if we go with a load that light, shot placement is the key.
The .308 would be the ticket, or maybe the .243.

Well, if I go hoggin again with a shotgun I'm gonna use no less than #4 buck. Thats what my friend was using and downed a 150# boar at 20 yrds. Yep, that piggie was DRT!

#4 buckshot?
The #4 in #4 is the size of the bb's in the shot load.

As my sig line says- What we have he-ah is......
There is #4 BIRDSHOT- mikes out at .130 inches
There is #4 BUCKSHOT- mikes out at .240 inches
Do not shoot pigs with birdshot. They will eat you.

Birdshot leaves a bad taste
I killed a hog this year with my AR15 and processed it. As we started eating on the meat we kept coming across steel pellets, someone shot this hog with bird shot and it lived. I got tired of biting into pellets and threw the rest out.
Please use the right load for the job, if not for the game, do it for the next hunter.
