Asking shotgun or handgun is like asking if you want celery or oranges

Handgun. You can answer strange knocks on the door with it in your pants, well,I guess you could do that with a shotgun too

Shotguns are singularly the most versatile gun...

I agree w the auto shotgun recommendation. I took my Remington 11-87 and 870 express to the range for pattern testing. Both 20 ga w 28" barrels. The 11-87 is wood while the 870 has synthetic stocks.

The recoil difference was extreme. Despite Remington's most advanced recoil pad on the 870, the auto vs pump was night vs day. Both shot to point of aim. Most hunting shotguns shoot a bit high to hit a rising bird but not these guns.

(I put a kick-eez pad on stock of 870 to deal w face slap). 3" mags will rock the molars

I would agree.

and pawn shops around here are the same way. The worst I saw was a Mossberg 715 for nearly $400.

I have a mossy 500. But if I could only have 1 gun it would be a handgun. Probably my 1911. Even with the pistol grip I have on it the mossy is tough to carry concealed.

Water or food...which one would you choose? Each has their purpose, benefit and drawback. A springfield 40 is more $ than an 870 Express so forget the trade unless you need the money. The trade in value alone on the Springfield will have you throwing some money in the toilet. Take it from a guy who has made many mistakes in buying and selling guns....that pattern will for the most part end up in diminishing returns. 870 Express's are very reasonable in price and are everywhere from Walmarts to Pawn Shops to Sporting Goods stores. There are always coupons and deals on them and many times Remington offers a $30 cash back on the 870's. Hang onto your 40 and save for the 870.....you won't regret that decision.

I have owned Mossberg 500's for over 35 years. There is no gun on the market that is as reliable or durable as a Mossberg 500. If you like to hunt buy a combo. You will get a 24" rifled barrel and a 28" accuchoke barrel. Three chokes will be included in the package. Buy a Mossberg with a wood stock. The 500 with a wood stock has a steel tube under the forearm.
