Default Shotgun for the boy

My sons 12th bday was today and went around to some lgs and pawnshops to get him his 12 gauge. Tossed around with the maverick 88 and some others when I came across a sears/jc Higgins model 20 in great shape resembles a 870 which I was originally hunting for. Got it home and took out the dowel rod in the mag tube. Now holding 5 instead of two. Going to put it through some paces tomorrow.

Out of season? Why is it only open part of the year?

Yeah it's on a big wildlife management area,, WMA's here in Virginia. Lots of stupid laws and taxes here but one thing I do have are some beautiful hunting lands. The range is on the Chickahominy WMA on the lower peninsula.

Although I am jealous of some of my northern neighbors such as C 3, even more beautiful land up in Northern Virginia..

Alright, got out yesterday and put about 80 rounds down range between the boys " new" model 20, and my 870. Even though he's shot numerous 12 gauges he was a lil nervous,, being that we hadn't fired it yet I went through the first five shells and he worked his nerves out quick because he went through a bunch of shells over the next hour and a half. The model20 shot great, trigger was decent, very tight patterns from the distance we were shooting, recoil was a bit snappy,, not terrible but for having a 28" barrel and full wood stock with the old recoil pad,,,kicked a bit harder than my sawed off 870, with metal folding stock ' no recoil pad..
All in all a great gun and a great day..
