Default Shotgun ammo/safety question.....

Don't laugh at me, but I have a Rossi 20g single shot 3" chamber. The question I have is:

Is it ok to use a 2 and 3/4 slug if the barrel is rated for 3"? I shoot 2 and 3/4 bird shot, but am just confused as to how if the shell does not come the full
3" to the barrel opening, how does the slug not hit the rim of the chamber?

If your barrel is marked for 2 3/4" & 3" shells, you'll be fine. I do it in my shotguns with no ill effects, a H&R single shot 410 and a Winchester 1300.

I think the key question here centers around the word "slug" if I'm not mistaken.

Unless you have an I/C or cylinder choke, I'd be careful shooting slugs out of a shotgun barrel. Most barrels that do not utilize screw in choke tubes are normally full or modified. Some Full or modifier barrels may be too restricting for some slugs. Be very careful in these uncharted waters and consult with the manufacturer of the firearm.

The shell will hold the slug centered in the barrel well enough to make the 1/4" jump to the barrel throat without difficulty.

Regarding shell lengths, you can use shorter cases in a longer chamber without problems. But you can't use longer shells in a shorter chamber, ie a 3" shell in a 2-3/4" chamber. The reason being that even though an unfired 3" shell might fit in a 2-3/4" chamber, there won't be any room for the crimp of the shell to open up inside the chamber - and bad things will happen.

Remember - that shotgun shell length is the measurement of a FIRED case, after the crimp has opened.

There is no "rim" on the chamber. Smooth taper from end of chamber to bore diameter.
