Default shot shells

Will 12ga #8 field and trap shells work for small game also?

Small small game, sure, especially birds, why not? Were I a chipmunk I'd be running and squeeking till I stopped.

Almost IMO, and Winchester's, etc. Here are their recommendations...



Target Shooting Games (lead shot)

16 yard Trap - 8, 8-1/2
Handicap Trap - 7-1/2, 8
Skeet - 9
Sporting Clays - 7-1/2, 8, 8-1/2
Live Pigeon - 7-1/2


Upland Game (lead or tungsten alloy shot)

Turkey - 4, 5, 6
Pheasant - 5
Chukker, Grouse, and Partridge - 6, 7-1/2
Quail - 7-1/2, 8
Dove - 7-1/2
Rail, Snipe and Woodcock - 7-1/2, 8
Rabbit - 6, 7-1/2
Squirrel - 6

I wouldn't use#8s for anything beside target shooting...I wouldn't hunt with anything smaller than 6s

Just shared my personal experience. Shot lots of dove and quail using #9 shot 30+ years ago. My Daddy said he preferred #9 because you had more pellets in the pattern.

Last time I shot dove, fall 2010, I used #8 shot.

I shoot #5's for pheasant, #4 for turkey.

Bigger critters, bigger shot. Would save the #8s for dove and quail. Tried to stay about #6 for rabbit/ squirrel.

Thanks just wasnt sure if it was diffrent for trap as far as shot size.

#8 for early season Dove. #7 1/2 for later season, they fly faster, higher and are more skeered so the larger shot is handy for the longer shots.

#8 for quail and woodcock.

#6 for Pheasant and squirrel

#4 or 6 for Rabbit
