I'm new at reloading shot shells and I had a brainstorm. I want to make a good self defense round using a combo of slug and 000 buck. Does it matter what is in the wad as long as it can handle the weight of the load. Example, using a wad for 1 and 3/8 oz lead shot recipe but using equal weight of slug/buck. Does anybody know if that would work?

Here is my recipe:
Fiocchi plastic basewad fold crimp
26.5 grs of 800x powder
Rem. SP12 wad
3, 000 buckshot
1, 20ga .125 card over pellets and under slug
1, 7/8 oz Foster type slug
Crimped


Any thoughts?

You need to read all the warnings in shotgun reloading manuals before you try to develope a custom load for your gun. Toying around with those types of experiments is like playing with dynamite.

Good advice here, as with any reloading you will want to get the reloaders bible or something of that nature, if you go too hot or misload a round it could be very hazardous, on the mild side it could harm your gun, on the serious side it could cause serious bodily injury or worse to the shooter. Not something you just want to start experimenting and playing with. My .02 cents worth.

I have been reading and studying the Lyman's 5th Edition, but it seems to lack any information in respects to what my original question was. I figured lead is lead regardless of what shape its in, as long it is the right size and as long as the weight to powder ratio is correct and along with a wad that can handle the weight. I understand I may have pattern dispersal problems and accuracy issues I was just hoping there was someone with more technical knowledge then me that has experience in custom loads. Load manuals are great and the press specs are good but they are limited and or brand specific. There has to be information on how this type of a load is done.

Some forums prohibit you to share your personal recipes, a gun range near me makes you purchase their ammo to shoot there due to some people loading some rounds way too hot and it really messed up one dude, and they don't want or need the liability, I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just stating you need to be really cautious when trying new stuff. My two cents worth.
