I have found in my limited experience that the Remington is easier to cycle than the Mossberg. This is comparing a dirt cheap 870 express to a dirt cheap 500.

As for every choice it comes down to what you want to do with it.

For home defense I went with a Mossy wholly based on ergonomics, I simply don't have to move my hand as much to operate the weapon. Course I wouldn't put a pistol grip on a Mossy due to safety position but thats me.

I have an 870 Express I use for skeet and hunting but the Mossy stays by the bedside.

That being said, both systems are solid and you really can't go wrong with either choice and I've never had any problems with either weapon. Hardest choice for me was 18" or 20" for the Mossy, nothing screams "wrong house mother ****er" like a bayonet equipped shotgun.

Default Rem 870 or Moss 500

Im a 870 fan for a reason. They are dependable/abusable. Chest deep in mud and water , my 870 super mag has had a rough life duck hunting. So far it has been flawless other then the factory matte finish rusts in minutes. Was easily cured with a few different colors of flat spray paint. Only bad thing I have seen from Mossberg 500s is the wood stocks seem to break behind the reciever.

I suggest a used 870. like wine they get better and smoother with age.

I have both a 500 and an 870, and I would'nt want to have to choose between them as they are both drop dead dependable. The 500 is slightly lighter and both have 18" barrels. Choose the one that feels best in your hands and shouldering, fit is the most important thing. Either one you choose you can't go wrong.
