the 870s in my hunting group are the most quite next to the semi auto benelli. We have 3 guys who use 500's then beside the benelli the other 4 of us use 870's which a little extra action action noise means all the difference between having meat to put in the freezer. Or trying to figure out what meat at the store has pink slime in it.

I got a buddy with a Benelli Nova, and it's a nice shotgun. If I was more of a duck hunter that's the one I'd have.
I stick to upland game mostly. I shot more pheasants with my 870 than my Benelli buddy last year. 8)
If the discussion is 500 vs 870 I'd say 870 every time. But comparing a quarter horse to an ol mule? That ain't fair!
