Same here. This is what so many folks fail to think about, and why the 870\500, Ford\Chevy, Mayo\miracle Whip, Jeff Gordon\Dale Jr., etc. fights break out. If it works for you good. That doesn't make it the end all be all of the shotgun world. I know it was friendly joking Akers, but still, IMHO, a good and valid point.

I've owned or own:

1) Winchester 1200, 12 ga., my 1st gun, bought in 1974 @ 15 y.o.
2) Mossberg 500, 20 ga.
3) Mossberg 835, 12 ga., 2nd yr. production, I think I bought it in 1999.
4) Mossberg 835, 12 ga., Turkey Ultimag.
5) Remington 870 Express, 12 ga., bought it in about 2000, for ducks/geese.
6) S&W 3000 Riot gun, 12 ga.
7) Remington 1100, 12 ga., gift from my father.
8) Winchester 1400 12 ga., pre-1974 production.
9) Winchester 1300, 20 ga., youth model.
10) Stoeger Uplander, 12 ga., side x side.
11) Partisan ???, 12ga., Turkish Semi.
12) Marlin 512 Slugmaster bolt-action, 12 ga., my DE & Chester Co., PA deer gun.

I've shot and/or hunted with everyone of these and they will all kill something/someone dead as dead can be.
Choose a gun you can A) afford, B) fits you and C) you're not afraid to get dirty or marred. They all work!

yep, that pretty much sums it up right there. When I chose my Maverick 88 back in 1991, and then my 870 in 2006 those were the criteria I went by. I gave the 88 to a friend's son in 2008 to get him started in hunting because out of the 2, the 870 was a better fit, and it was a lot harder to mar or bang up. Not that that matters much to me. Every scratch, dent, ding, and scuff tells a story of where the gun and I have been, and what we went through. What it mainly says is:

"Been there, Done that. I am not a safe queen, I look like this because I get used. I can be relied on when I must not fail, take care of me, and I will take care of you."

Can't ask for more than that IMHO.

My first shotgun was a 20 gauge 870 youth that was bought for me(my pride and joy). I shot that from about 14 yo till i was 20. About 5 years ago I finally went out and got a 12g 870, giving my god son my 20. I shoot a good bit of clays and the 870 did good enough for me untill a friend of mine brought out his 500. It just fit me better. The positioning, balance, and action. In the end I traded for a almost new 500. Handle both and I think youll know, and if you can take them out and shoot them both for a day itll benefit you in recognising the differences and picking which suits you. For the past year in the hd department I felt comfortable with my 870, and just the same with the 500 as far as reliability.

You guys kknow that the mossberg 500 is a sloppy copy of a remington 31. Its action is like trying to close a rusty car door compared to the 870. The only reason that the mossbergs are so popular is because snot nosed punks got there hands on the persuader model or the tactical models. If you want a solid gun you be able to keep forever you want the 870. How hard is it to move a safety with your trigger? Plus if you practice with your weapon it doesnt matter where the safety. What sells the 870 is the smooth bolt. There has never been a 500 that could cycle as fast an 870. Let all the kids think they are hot stuff because they have a chainsaw on their firearm and buy a real gun that isnt a poor copy of a hand crafted firearm. If anyone has a remington 31 you know exactly what im talking about. How did mossberg take that design and screw it uo that much
