Remington 870 20ga Shells?

Recently bought a Remington 870 Express 20 gauge. Pretty much a neophyite on shotguns. It says it can take 2 3/4" or 3" shells. I'm assuming the chamber is 3", although I can't seem to find documentation to support that. Anyway, I've read in other general shotgun discussions that it's better not to use shells smaller than the chamber. Anyone disagree?

Also, I was told by the salesman I could use buckshot. Any differing opinions here?

Main use: HD

Many thanks!

Read your owner's manual.

Though I have a 12 gauge, it should be similar for you. I can't be responsible for what you do with YOUR gun, but I use both size shells in my 870 and my Browning and use buckshot in my 870 and in my 1100 (I haven't had the need to shoot buckshot in the browning yet, but wouldn't feel bad doing so). No problems so far...

If the barrel is stamped 2 3/4" & 3" then, yes you have a 3" chamber. 3" is the length of the FIRED shell. This allows the pedals to open on firing and safely release the shot. Shooting 2 3/4" shells thru a 3" chamber is no problem whatsoever.

Thanks much.

Assuming you have no choke on the barrel, you can fire buckshot, birdshot and slugs just fine. Whether you use the 2.75" or 3" rounds depends on the application, but you can fire either just fine. I have the same gun in a tactical configuration.

Thank bkt. No choke. Got some #2 buck, Federal.
