Default Remington 1100/1187 question

Will a remington 1100 or 1187 reliably cycle light target loads? Down to 7/8?

Depends. On whether it's an 1100 or an 11-87. What gauge it is. Velocity and powder. Whether it's a Magnum, standard, or Target/Skeet model. That being said, in my experience, most 12 gauge standard 1100s will handle a 7/8 ounce load at 1200 fps. A goodly percentage of 11-87s will not. According to Remington the 11-87 is designed to handle down to 1-1/8 ounce field loads.
What could have happened... did.
