My 88 was my first gun ever and has seen a bit of abuse, still going strong... Only thing that I ever had to fiddle with was that screw goes through the action bar into the reciever right inside the chamber came loose once,a little lock tight and a screwdriver fixed that, also I've found that if you really crank down on the screw that holds the buttstock to the reciever it will lock up the trigger.

Overall great gun though

I used to have a normal run of the mill Mossberg 500 that I shot trap with. It would out-shoot any remington, Beretta, winchester, etc. that I put it up to.

Ohh yea, and it went 10,000+ without any problems. I've worked on and owned both moss 500, and remington 870. The Mossberg 500 is far superior.

Shooting trap is mostly in the shooter....but as far as the 500 being superior to the 870 I agree

I would hold off on calling all 870's junk. I have three Wingmasters dating early-mid 1970's that are the best fitting/built and smoothest pumps I have shot. The newer express models Are junk compared to them

I'm not saying that the 870's are junk, just saying that the mossberg 500 is overall better.

Now the older wingmasters are really nice, smooth, good shooting guns. I've shot trap with one of those as well.

the 500 may be better than the 870 express . but the wing master is a different story. have owned all three, the wingmaster in several different vinteges and grades

I have what people here seem to call junk, a modern Remington 870 Express and I like it. The only thing that is "junk" (and I wouldn't go as far as calling it junk myself) is the finish. The gun is solid so I would have no problem recommending it to anyone. I don't know much about Mossberg.
