I'm in the market for my first shotgun.
The purpose (not sure if one exists): home defense, clay/trap shooting (on occassion).
Budget ~$400
Is it possible?? |

Sure.
Used Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Both should be around $250-$300 in very good shape.
Not so much for shooting clays in competition - but for just going to the range and banging out a few boxes of shells, they will treat you right.

Bascially the Chevy small block of the shotgun world. More add ons available than just about anything in the gun market, short of the Reminton 700 of course, and EVERYONE can work on the damn things. They run, they run well and they are reliable.
They aren't the most cutting edge design, but they have been around for as long as they have been for a reason. Durable. Reliable. And they don't cost an arm a leg to get into....
Just a thought for your price range...

Oh yeah, EASILY get one for under $400. Once in a while MC Sports has a Mossberg 500 combo (vent rib barrel and rifled barrel) for $250. Dunham's Sports also has the Mossberg 500 combo on sale with a scope for $300 all the time. You will have no problem getting a shotgun on that budget. | |

Shotgun home defense, to me, is short barrel (easy to swing in tighter spaces) smooth bore for large buckshot (never bird shot in home defense).
Trap shooting is long smooth barrel with game loads.
Listen to TommyBommy66 and look at the Mossberg 500. Used 'bout $150-180. You can buy barrels for $130-175. No scope needed for either use. Combos can be had for less than $250. I love my Mossberg 500A. Use it for turkey, deer, home protect and trap. __________________ From C3Shooter:

I forgot to mention that the Mossberg 500 shoots both 2-3/4" and 3" shells while the 870 is 2-3/4" only. That is all.  __________________ From C3Shooter:

Hate to be argumentative, but I don't think they have made a 2-3/4" only Model 870 in 20 years. | |

I'll second that, my father-in-law shoots 3" shells from his 870 all the time. Don't forget about the 870 Express Super Magnum, which shoots everything from 2-3/4 up to 3-1/2" shells interchangably. Not that you need a 3" or 3-1/2" shell to kill your target. In my opinion, the only thing magnum shells are good for is kick the buck out of your shoulder. If I can't kill it with a 2-3/4, I probably won't kill it with a magnum. I'm sorry I just don't think (as well as know) you don't need a magnum shell to shoot the head off a turkey. __________________
