Parker bros 1885 shotgun

Recently acquired a Parker Bros dbl hammer shotgun. From serial number it was made in 1885. The action and stock are in fair condition. The barrel is a different story. It is the twist steel that had a brown patina finish with plenty of heavy rust. I'd like to clean this up. I used some steel wool , .0000 removed the light stuff but I still have a lot of pitting. To remove the pitting I'm going to have to remove the brown finish. So where do I go from here. Remove the rust and pits, and brown patina, then re-brown? Leave it unfinished? Or just oil it and leave the pitting. Not that I have any desire to sell this, but I would like to maintain the highest integrity possible.

Just hit it with clp and give it a light scrub and hang it on the wall. Don't even think about shooting it.

Get on eBay or Amazon depending on your budget & buy the 4 Kinks books. If you get into restoring old guns Brownells & Numrich are your new best friends & your wife's new enemy.

Great books to have in your arsenal. Good advice.

The kinks books are great. In this case I would just oil it and hang it on the wall.

"Cleaning", along with "improving" and "restoring" a collectable firearm with pretty well totally destroy any collector's value.

What you call crud and dirt, collectors call patina.

As the folks have said, CLP, soft cloth, then STOP.

c3shooter. I appreciate your comment, this is well beyond patina. Unfortunately this firearm, the barrel has severe surface rust. What you would expect to see on a piece of steel left to the weather for many years
