I'm looking at either a cheap mossberg 500 or remmington 870 12ga walmart has a sale on a cheap 500 for like $257 I was thinking of getting. I'm looking to deer hunt. And need to know what I need to shoot buckshot and slugs?

You are on the right track. If you look in the Walmart gun catalog you will see a Mossberg 500 combo. A combo is a 500 with a 28" accu choke barrel and a special purpose barrel. In your case you want a combo with a rifled slug barrel. The combo's are usually less than $50 more than just a gun with a 28" vent rib barrel. The 500 is already drilled and tapped for a scope. I would put a Nikon 4x fixed power shotgun scope on the gun. A 12 ga slug kicks like a mule. The recoil of a shotgun will break the crosshairs in a scope made for a rifle. I put Weaver Quad lock rings on shotguns. Recoil has broke the regular weaver steel rings. It only took a few years to break the rings.

Alright so I do need a second barrel for slugs? Even if I'm using rifled slugs?

You will if the constriction of the choke prevents passage of the slug.

I suppose that makes sense. So am I looking for a smooth bore slug barrel or a rifled slug barrel?

Why don't you use your 'defence' gun with sporting bbls???
This makes good sense because you will be 'training' with our defense gun while hunting. I did this MANY years ago. When we went to the 870 I got one and got several bbls for it and used it for everything.

Longer barrels are more accurate. Rifled barrels are more accurate. Longer, rifled barrels are most accurate.

Went to the local gun store they have a used moss 500 12ga with an adjustable choke seems to twist tight for a tighter choke looser for open choke. They wanted $229 for it and it was an older more sturdy mossberg 500 compared to the new ones. Not sure if I should try it or not
