I think Remington's overall quality on the lower cost 870 models has indeed suffered a bit. Mossberg has proven for decades a gun can be inexpensive, and still be very reliable, show good quality, and last for decades.
The Remington Wingmasters and Police Models are still showing good quality, but for the price they damn well should. There is also a lot more competition in the combat shotgun market today, than there was just a few years ago. Benelli and several other manufacturers are producing a lot of models that shooters can choose from. Everyone is watching the combat / self defense shotgun market these days. Especially with the advent of popularity 3-Gun shooting is receiving lately.
But I agree with you, in that the lower cost shotgun market, the Mossbergs have shown very good quality and value for the dollar. In todays economy that might be all the edge they need.

Talk to the Rolling Stones!
I like 870's and Mossbergs (I have a New Haven 600), they are both excellent shotguns.

I plan on shooting it soon, maybe early next week so I'll follow up with some comments and a few pictures.
Really love this thing!

I LOVE these firearms, I've owned a few in different configurations and they are work horses.

As far as I know, you cannot have a handgun permit in "joint names", like a tax return, or a bank account. Much like a 4473 form, it is a document that is framed around a single individual.

I Already have a 500. This thread makes me want to start looking for another one. I reallylike the carbon fiber. Nice thouch.
I remember when the 500 was new, the racking action was quite stiff. After some 200 or so rounds the parts marries up and it cycles like butter.
