I bought a used Mossy 500 about a month ago and I love it. It's extremely easy to use, take apart, clean, and accessorize. I plan on getting a shorter 18.5" barrel for HD and using the 28" barrel for trap shooting. As others have said, when it gets beat all up and unusable, I will probably just buy another one, rather than repair it, since they're so cheap. I might even try out their Maverick 88 some time.

here's my 500, only had it about 6 months now, but i love it! i like the 870 as well, shot them a bunch. the 870 may have more accessories, but the 500 has just as many IMO. they just need more sight choices, prefferably tritium sights. plenty of stocks and grips to choose from though.

I'm just curious how long it would take you to beat a Mossberg into submission like that. Barring a terrible accident or outright neglect of course.

I love sharing pics of my Mossberg! You can get a pretty good idea from this thread just about how versatile they are!
Mossberg 500 persuader/cruiser (it came with rifle stock and pistol grip) 18.5" barrel. Knoxx Spec ops stock, Tac star 6 shot side saddle, and a Tac Star heat shield.
Only about half way done with this gun. 2 shot mag extension, sling & mounts, picantany rail, tritium front sight, oversized metal safety, and I'm probably going to end up getting a new forend with rails for a light. That's all on the list for this build;]

I second that. I have suggested to BLACKHAWK like ten times that they should make a ghost ring sighting system for mossbergs, that requires no gunsmithing to install.... still waiting on it.

500's & 870's are great. There kind of cool to because you have allot of accessories for cheap.
Mossburg makes a cheap "Maverick" that you can smash and trash & not feel bad about it ($100-$150). Had mine for years, takin a lot of abuse. I still wouldn't recommend it for a home defense though.

tellmaster: Just curious, can you give some reasons why you "wouldn't recommend it for a home defense..."

Sure, the reason I wouldn't use it for home defense is failure to fire. I bought mine new about seven years ago. Even when it was new I would get a few FTF's (maybe 1 in 250). Now I've been totally abusing this gun for years and I'll get, maybe 1-125. Plus now I've takin the aluminum receiver apart about 3 million times. So I don't even recommend it for hunting either. Cheap guns are fun, but I really have never owned one I'm confident enough to bet my life on it.
