You're popping the cork 10" closer to your ear, so the short barrel will seem louder.

I'm pretty happy with my 870. It's a Police Magnum variant. It feeds everything I put in it, which is only 2 3/4" and 3" buckshot and slugs from Remington, Federal, and Winchester. Lately, only Remington. I've expended all my Federal and Winchester.

The only stocks I've had on it are SpeedFeeds, the original that came with the gun and a IV-S. The pistol grip makes holding and carrying it easier on the wrist, but doesn't seem to affect shooting much. The stock that came with the gun was meant for a viking. I'm only 5'10", so it was too long for me.

The supercell recoil pad, which didn't come with the gun but was supplied by Remington for free, was better than the limbsaver because the limbsaver was too grabby.

I spent more on accessories than I did on the gun. So far:

SureFire M69 picatinny rail
SureFire M961 weapon light
GG&G safety
GG&G follower
GG&G sling loops
Blue Force Gear quick adjust sling
SpeedFeed IV-S
S&J bayonet lug
Clark Clamp
TacStar side saddle
Remington magazine extension
Remington slug barrel

Both barrels came with rifle sights. They're pretty fast to align.

I replaced the SpeedFeed slide with the M69 because my hands would sweat in the summer heat and humidity and slip off the SpeedFeed during recoil. The M69, being a picatinny rail, is pretty grippy.

Although it doesn't beat up my shoulder, the stock that came with it always smacked the crap out of my cheek, which the IV-S stock helped with because the angle isn't quite as steep. This is subjective, but I can't perceive any real recoil difference between the 590A1 and the 870P.

All that crap added up to a fairly heavy shotgun; well over 9 pounds with 14 rounds.

If the 590A1 had been available at the LGS, I would have had it instead of the 870P. I like them both.

I've got an 870 which I love. But have recently decided to purchase a browning maxus hunter and it has been a wonderful gun.

Can you explain the difference, I haven't handled an 870 in years. Are you talking about the fact the Mossy doesn't really control the shell? If so that is one of the things I like about them, you can jack the elevator down to right before it pushes the flat bar shell holder in then drop whatever round you want in the ejection port and pull it shut. One of the big reasons I've lost interest in my Win. 1200 clunker is the fact I can't do that.

It allows ghost loading and if the shell drops, it can be caught by the elevator. Also it adds, for me at least a positive feedback that the shell is securely in there.

That's awesome. Who sells that?

Are you making those safety lever devices or was that just a personal prototype?

The shell lifter on the 870 makes it harder to load in the winter with gloves on, slower to load, and messes up your nails, after you just spent an hour painting them. I consider it to be a design flaw..........

Do they make Cerakote for nails? Maybe some kevlar instead of acrylic?
