I have a 870 super magnum from 2007? Only issue is the front "high viz" sight, came off. Screw came loose and it fell off. Called Remmington and they sent the wrong one. Still have no front sight. Only complaint. It's a cheap part.

My 870 has never been to the shop for anything, nor has it ever had a shell stuck in the action. To me the 500 simply feels like its a "cheaper" gun, to me it even sounds chinsier when working the action, it just doesn't feel as stout as the 870, the only thing I prefer about the 500 is the safety because I am left handed and it just works nicer for me, as far as I am concerned which one is better is a matter of opinion and personal preference. I know more people around here with the 870 than the 500 as well, and I don't know of 1 person who has had a issue with the action not functioning. That's not to say it doesn't happen, I am sure there has been more than 1 Mossberg which contained production flaws as well, they just don't get the press, it seems everyone is on the flame Remington bandwagon nowadays.

No Mossberg has ever had a production flaw that i am aware of.....lol, They are hand built by Amish craftsmen in New Haven, CT.

I'm not into accessories, I prefer bare bones function, could care less about the tacticool and crap you see on movies. I also think a pistol grip on a shotgun is a bad idea. However I do have a soft spot in my heart for chainsaws and that Stihl gun is pretty neat.

There is some idiot out there who designed and built a chainsaw bayonet mount for zombie killing. I think they even sell it. I don't personally own an 870, though I have two at my house at the moment....a 12 gauge and a .410
The level of quality to me is top notch, though they are a few years old and relatively unused. I do however own a Remington 1100 20 gauge and it has never once failed in any way shape or form. To me, there is just something that seems to be lacking when you can buy that Mossberg 500 for under $300 new. My .22 handguns cost more than that. That and the 870 sells used for more than the Mossberg does new in most cases.....
