Default Mossberg 500 Cleaning

I have just bought a Mossberg 500, 18.5" barrel, 5+1 pump gun. The cleaning instructions imply that the barrel must be removed to facilitate cleaning. Is that really necessary? I'm concerned about causing excessive wear, and want to prolong the useful life of the gun.

They slide right out of the receiver after you've take off the forearm. Everything comes right apart and then you can really get in to clean the internals and oil the forearm slide. Also makes so when you pull a boresnake or rod through the barrel, you aren't getting any residue in the action of the gun.

If your shooting birdshot, once a year or every couple thousand rounds isn't going to cause any significant wear.

you will wear out before the mossberg does from dissassembly reassembly for cleaning.

All correct, except you don't need to remove the forearm to remove the barrel. Unscrew the end cap and easy peasy. Clean the barrel from chamber out, the same direction the shot or slug travels. Reassemble in reverse. I've had my Mossy for almost 25 years. I use it for hunting, clays, hd...no excessive wear here.

Default Mossberg 500 Cleaning

Thank you all. I don't expect to do a lot of shooting with it, so I'll clean it whenever I expect it to be sitting for a couple of weeks or more. I bought it primarily for home defense.

Thanks

I have had mine for 20 years. I bought it used. The internal parts are parkerized and show no wear. It is estemated to be a mid '70's manufacture. You really only need to break it down after 200..500 rounds. Just clean the barrel every time. I use mine for upland bird, water fowl, coyotes, rabbits, clays......

OK, thanks. I didn't know how sturdy the 500 was, but I guess I can clean it maybe 4 times a year.

Clean it, light (very light) oil and let it sit. No need to clean it after that if you don't use it. Shoot it, clean it. Don't shoot it, no need to reclean it.

It's easy to remove the barrel with the pump pulled back halfway.
