Mossberg 385k and steel shot

I have a mid 60s Mossberg 385k 20 gauge bolt action it has the poly choke on it....would it be safe to shoot steel shot out of it with it being that old

Probably not, most guns that old cannot shoot steel. Last I herd, you aren't supposed to shoot steel from polychokes either.

In answer to the steel shot question- no. Steel shot will begin to gall the metal of your "dial-a-duck" choke. Those were FAR pre-steel shot, and are just not designed fot it. Go with bismuth shot.

For Mossberg bolt action shotguns, here ya go-

Akers, She's a beaut. As usual, C3 is right. I own a 185-d, and a 185-ka. Go with bismuth, the older barrels will not handle steel.

Axxe. As I said in the other 385 thread, nice lookin' shotgun.

Here's a pic of my 185-d. Aside from age ( mine was made between 1946 and 1949) the differences are; bolt design, interchangeable chokes (Barrel threaded on the outside, tubes on the inside), and no rear sight. Mine does have a Redding peep sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. it was bought used in 1954 by my grandfather who passed it down ro my father in 1965, who passed it down to me in 1988. My step- daughter is the 4th generation of my family to carry it afield, but she still has yet to take a deer with it. Maybe this year.

As I said guys, Nice looking shotties!
