Yes you can. In a shotgun, you can always use a shell shorter than its chamber, you just cannot use a shell that is longer. For example, if a shotgun has a 3" chamber, you can fire a shell 2 3/4" (or shorter), but you cannot fire a 3 1/2" shell in it.

I always use the same size in my 500 and I've never had an issue with it. Let me know if you run into issues.

Yes you can use any 3 inch or shorter shell in the gun if it is chambered for 3 in......that's like my 3 1/2 inch STOEGER m3500 I can shoot everything from 3 1/2inch and shorter shells in it

If you try it, I recommend starting out with just one shell in the tube magazine to see how is cycles to put the round in the chamber and ejects it after firing it. If that works well then load 3 shells in the tube mag and see how it works going through all 3. That way you are only dealing with a couple of rounds in the mag if something hangs up. I do this will all of my .22s that shoot S, L, and LR.

Like everyone said, doing get ammo longer than 3 inches. With it being a pump it should cycle fine.

Appropos of nothing, .223 and 5.56 is the same round. .223" is 5.56mm. A pump like the Mossberg 500, or single or two barrel guns with a fixed breech, will usually function with any shell not longer than the chamber length. Many semi autos will not.

It only makes sense that if you have the 3" chamber you can use that size and anything under. Its like saying 3" is the max, obviously trying to shove a 3.5" in there is no bueno. Ive seen many shotguns advertised as (for example) 3" chamber, holds 6 shells 2 3/4, 7 shells 2 1/4 ect ect. And with a mossberg, your fine theyre tanks and run forever.

While you are correct on the shotguns, .223 and 5.56 are not exactly equivalent.

While .223 can be shot in a 5.56, it is highly discouraged to shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered rifle. 5.56 is loaded to higher pressure and I saw a post on here a while back explaining the differences in the dimensions of the casings.

Kind of like its okay to shoot 2.75 shells in a 3 inch shotgun chamber, don't shoot 3 inch in a 2.75 chamber.
